week 14 onwards

our final presentation has finally been fixed for the 9th of july which is week 15. it was supposed to be on week 16 but ms jeya put it forward. initially i was a bit worried about the date being brought forward but atleast this pressured me to work and finish it sooner.

i'm actually done with the system already. im just carrying out alot of testing so that nothing fails me last minute! we've got exams on week 16 so having the presentation sooner was a good thing..

anyways, i faced a few last minute problems with the system.. they are probably very minor problems to people who have more experience but to me, it was time consuming to figure out what was going wrong.

firstly, when i was creating the game, the basic concept of the game was to find the hiding mosquitoes and once u find all of them, the game ends. the problem i had was that it didnt recognise the mosquitoes that were already caught. therefore, i was able to click on the same mosquito 7 times in order to end the game!!!!!

finally, i added an array to check which ones were already chosen.. writing the action scripts also were a bit challenging for me because im not too familiar with any of the scripting part! :( believe it or not, when i first started this project i didnt even know how to link from one scene to another! so i guess ive learnt quite alot while working on the project..

i found most of the information from forums and other tutorials online... i also looked through a book called 'action script for games in flash' which was very useful..

the other problem i faced while creating the system was sound overlapping!!!!! im sure there is a simpler way to control this maybe using action script or another method.. but i spent about three days just searching for the solution for this !! because in my system, everytime u click on a button, theres a voice over that says all the text that appears.. and sound over lapping in such a situation was becoming very messy!!!

i created a new layer and inserted the event: stop at every single point i wanted it to stop!!! it was a very tedious method of doing this but i found no other solution.. since i was running against time, i did it with this method. however, i am still curious to find out how to solve this method !!!

im sure when i finally found out, its gonna make me jump off my chair and say 'THAT WAS IT' !!!

anyways, this would probably be the last post since i have nothing else to say! :)

week 13

progress is going smooth with the project ..

i have already done the introduction, the main page and also ive been adding in the contents for the diseases section !! haha.. my project is pretty much "diseased".. (just kidding)

anyways, this week we were told that we have to finish up 100% for week 15 since ms megan would be down on week 16 and our work would be handed over to her directly..

ms jeya also said that next friday we should test our work in the production lab ! i hope things would go smoothly !! we would only know once testing is carried out .. i have already designed the game section too, im just working on the action script now!!! there seems to be some error and i need to figure that out asap !!

argh.. these last few weeks are really really really really STRESSFUL !!!!!!

week 12

bad news and good news this week !!!!

although i was all geared up to show my work last week... i wasn't able to make it on the day due to some unavoidable circumstances. as i assumed, ms jeya needed some reasonable explanation and proof and i was able to do that ! :) atleast i wasnt faking it and skipping class for no reason ..

anyways, i contacted her on the day itself and informed her and she asked me to come see her this monday so i went to her office and showed her some work..

i had some problems with the actions scripts for the introduction movie and she helped me figure out it !!!

the problem was that the link to the next scene through a movie clip wasnt working .. and it was a simple problem that i hadnt included the frame number !!!!!!! so basically, it was just a simple "1" that was causing all the problems ..

sometimes , debugging can be a real problem .. especially when you have been starring at the same thing for so long and nothing seem to be wrong although its not working too! argh..

week 11

oh nooo...

we got a bit of a shock this week .. it was rather unexpected !

ms jeya suddenly informed us that she wants to see our system atleast 50% done and that she would be grading us on what we have done so far !!! i have completed only about 30% so far truth be told ..

anyways, i guess this would get me geared up !! i need to work on the intro and the main page atleast.. i have been searching for the contents. i got some information from a clinic too regarding dengue but i still have to find more sources regarding chikungunya !!

(just to refresh you.. my project is about AEDES AWARENESS and dengue and chikungunya are the two main diseases im focussing on !!! )

week 10

actually this week was a bit confusing ..

this is because when we informed ms jeya that our scope was reduced by mr.luke she was a bit surprised. however, i guess this was done because we are really running against time at the moment.. its a good thing as well as a bad thing i guess..

the good thing about it would be that we could finish up early and then think of additional elements and testing. the bad thing is that our final year project wouldnt be as grand i guess? oh well, its a final "semester" project afterall !!

anyways, moving onto what i did this week.. i checked our some action script books from the library and also i was working on the intro animation .. i am still collecting information about how to do the game.. i have a few ideas and im not too sure whether i would have the time to create a few short games or whether i should solely focus on one ..

lets see how it goes ! :)

week 09 - lukes visit !

mr.luke came down this week for the vu visit and we really learnt alot !!

he gave us so much ideas and so many sources to get sound effects and other stuff from ! he showed us alot of examples too which was a good thing because theres always something to learn from them!!

another good idea that he gave was to always get feedbacks from people and pretend its not your work so that you would end up getting a honest feedback!

uhm, oh yeah.. he also gave us daily tasks that were to be completed for the next day !! it was pretty motivating i would say because atleast we were all forced to do some level of work and we knew we had to do it !!

i got alot of work done this week and i got my confusions cleared out too .. he said i could demo on a pc and i dont need to demo on a touch screen as i was told before !! yay ..

week 08

classes were cancelled this week !!!!!!!!

mr. luke would be coming down next week so i took the time to get some stuff done so that i would be able to show him .. atlaest give him an idea of how the overall system would look like although i dont think i would be able to add in much functionality into the system by then !!

also i have a feeling that certain changes would have to be made after the visit so im pretty excited for next week !! atleast i know for sure that any issues we need help about, we could ask mr.luke next week !! yay !

argh.. this final year project is sure getting stressful ! :(

**atleast its the final semester ! ;) best thing to just give it ur best and get it over with ! :D

MID SEMESTER BREAK!

the mid semester break just passed and as i guessed before it was really not a break at all !! :(

i had to take a day or two off this week for some family functions and so i have to work double during the days before that in order to get more done!! anyways, i have already done up the design and the basic buttons and the elements that need to go into the system..

i also searched around for some sound effects that i would need for the buttons etc..

i guess things are going smoothly.. i hope i wouldnt face one big problem anytime during the project because we really dont have anyone to help us out on the technical aspect :( which really sucks! :(

week 07

nothing much happened this week actually ..

we were supposed to have the VU visits but it was cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances...

i spent this week doing up the progress reports.. since i have already written the blog, all i had to do was just check up with the blog and write up the progress reports...

i guess thats the convenience of blogging?? :) haha.

we have mid semester break next week but this time its so not going to be a break AT ALL !! i would have to really get down to doing my project .. i lost alot of time at the beginning because my proposal took a long time to get accepted.. :(

anyways, nothing to panic about .. should be done on time .. ! *fingers crossed*

week 06

oh no... this week again my chance to show my concept demo and the story board was postponed because we only have one hour of classes and it was taken up by others to show their work :(

anyways, ms jeya asked us to come see her next week .. atleast i have all my work done now since i was expecting it last week anyway! and this week i have made the changes and re done the story board. so i guess i'll just leave that aside and wait to show her next week ! :D

week 05

we were supposed to have our concept demo this week but it was postponed .. anyways, i have done most of it and needed to meet ms jeya regarding some of the other stuff that needed to be cleared out.

another lecturer suggested to me that i should do the project in two different languages. however, i figured that if i was implementing this system for the university, it should be in English alone? im a bit confused about this so far.. need to get that cleared out..

i wanted to get it over and done with regarding the concept demo.. but atleast now i have more time to sort things out and make the necessary changes!! woohoo ..

i usually dont like postponed work because that ends up in me being lazy .. haha! but this time i have so much of workload on my head and i probably have no time to laze around anyways !

alright, gonna get back to doing some work now ! :)

4th week

This week we were supposed to show a draft story board. However, I was unable to do this because my proposal wasn’t accepted. Therefore, I didn’t attend the lesson either because I’m eagerly waiting for the title to be approved first !!

Apart from that, the rest of the class also haven’t proceed much on the system side of the project yet. Since this subject is focusing solely on the system side mainly, I assume there would be much more to write in this blog as time passes.

It’s still very confusing that the system of the project is carried out by one subject and the proposal is done on another subject. Hmm. We are getting used to it anyway!

first three weeks

its been three weeks into the semester so far.. unfortunately none of us have started much on the final year project itself because we got the feedback from VU just last week. everything was so confusing initially because the final year project is split up into two units! (yes, very confusing) and the proposal is considered as an assignment in the DVD AND SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT subject. i still don't quite understand how it works but at least i have figured it out for now!

my proposal had some confusion and questions in the feedback i received so i made necessary changes and resubmitted it again last week itself along with a back up proposal. just in case. the main title i did was a courseware to teach my mother tongue. the back up was a Aedes Awareness system for a KIOSK.

hmm. i just hope to receive a feedback as soon as possible so that i wont be too far behind with the others. we are supposed to show a story board tomorrow but i am just doing a brief sketch for both because i don't know which one would be accepted anyway!!

argh. i'm stressed out ! :(
